FileMan Root Folder outside public_html

Before I decided to sign up for FILEMan, Johan told me "You can also move your folder where you store your files below http root, this is perfectly possible."

Now how do I do it? My file root directory would be e.g. "../repository", i.e. one level below public_html.

Is it possible to access single files (e.g. an image or video) from within a K2 item oder Joomla article directly? I did not find this in the documentation.

Hello Roman,

This is possible with the current stable version but there are some drawbacks that you need to be aware about.

The current stable FILEman version still makes use of com_media settings, since FILEman is meant to be a replacement for this core component. Because of this you just need to to set the "Path to Files Folder" in com_media settings to something that starts with a / for making it absolute to the server's filesystem.

Things you should know:

  1. Com_media will no longer work as it only knows to work with relative paths.
  2. Links to files added through the FILElink editor button won't work either since we direct link files on it. If the file lies outside of the server document root then the file cannot be reached this way.

On the other hand files will be reachable using a FILEman menu item and from the backend.

On FILEman 3.0 beta (which is already available) we have changed all this for better supporting this possiblity. FILEman 3.0 now holds its own configuration so problem Getting started with DOCman isn't an issue anymore. We also no longer use direct links for FILElinks which also solved problem #2.

Please keep in mind though that FILEman 3.0 is still a beta release which means that it may contain bugs. We discourage its use on production environments.

I hope this helps.
