Adding a rating system to documents in DOCman?

I am realizing this functionality does not currently exist in DOCman, nor is there a DOCman extension that provides a rating system. It is needed! I will pay!!

Is it possible to program a custom rating system for DOCman documents? I have a developer, but need to know if it will "break" my current functionality....
